Test day nerves are perfectly normal — even the most prepared candidates feel them. Knowing exactly what to expect makes a real difference.

Before You Go

Bring your valid photocard provisional driving licence and your theory test pass certificate. Wear suitable footwear. Check the address of your test centre carefully.

The Eyesight Check

The test begins outside with an eyesight check. You will be asked to read a number plate at a minimum of 20 metres. Failing the eyesight check ends the test immediately.

Show Me, Tell Me Questions

You will be asked two vehicle safety questions — one answered verbally before getting in the car, and one demonstrated while driving. Getting both wrong counts as one minor driving fault.

The Drive

The drive lasts approximately 40 minutes across various road types. You will complete general driving, one reversing manoeuvre, and around 20 minutes of independent driving following either a satnav or road signs. Around one in three candidates is asked to perform an emergency stop.

How Faults Are Recorded

The examiner records driving faults (minors), serious faults, and dangerous faults. Fifteen or fewer minor faults means a pass. One serious or dangerous fault means a fail.

After the Drive

If you pass, you receive a pass certificate immediately. If you fail, the examiner explains each fault — listen carefully and use this feedback for your resit.
