Before you can book your practical driving test, you must pass the theory test. Here is everything you need to know in 2026.

What Is the Theory Test?

The UK driving theory test is split into two parts, both taken in the same sitting at an official DVSA test centre.

The first part is 50 multiple-choice questions, of which you must answer at least 43 correctly within 57 minutes. The second part is the hazard perception test: 14 video clips containing 15 developing hazards in total. You need to score at least 44 out of 75.

You must pass both parts in the same sitting. If you fail one, you fail the whole test.

Cost

The theory test costs £23 to book through the official DVSA website at gov.uk. Be wary of third-party booking sites that charge significantly more.

How to Prepare

Use official resources such as the DVSA Theory Test Kit. Study the Highway Code thoroughly — understand the reasoning behind the rules, not just the answers. Practice hazard perception regularly: click when you see a hazard developing, not after it has fully formed.

On the Day

Bring your valid provisional driving licence photocard. Arrive at least 15 minutes early. You cannot bring your phone or revision materials into the test room.

Certificate Validity

Your theory test certificate is valid for two years. You must pass your practical test within this window, or you will need to retake the theory test.
